What's happening?The powder floats on the surface tension of the water. Soap breaks that tension at the contact point, moving the water and powder rapidly outwards.

Materials |  | 1. Small bowl | |  | 2. Water | |  | 3. Blue food coloring | |  | 4. Talcum powder, baby powder, or cornstarch | |  | 5. A little liquid dish soap | |  | 6. Cotton bud |
Steps |  | 1. Pour in enough water to cover the bottom. | |  | 2. Add blue food coloring and mix. | |  | 3. Dust a thin, dry layer of powder over the entire surface. | |  | 4. Dip a cotton bud in dish soap. | |  | 5. Touch it to the water and watch cracks appear as the powder moves aside. |
